Helping a "softball" community in need
Posted 1/20/2010 09:53:00 AM.
To All Softball Players & Families,
I have just received word from a softball “junkie†friend, formerly from Stow but now living in Fruitland(Georgetown) Florida, of a Middle School/High School (grades 7-12) called Crescent City Junior Senior High School in Crescent City, Florida that is in dire need of softball equipment. This is possibly the poorest city in the State of Florida and just last year there was an estimated 100 students considered “homelessâ€. The school would very much like to offer softball to their students (all grades all eligible for H.S. sports) and have done so in the past but equipment issues have become a major problem due to the financial constraints of the district. Equipment is shared---not enough gloves for all players, etc. Some local churches have offered assistance in helping with the finances for the softball program but the need is much greater than this.
To lend a helping hand to students that want to play softball, the game that we love and probably take for granted here at HHS, I would like to see if our softball “family†could step up to the plate and help out a school district that is in need at this time.
Any softball items that are in decent shape and sitting around in a closet, not to ever be used again, could be of great use to these people. This would include: softball gloves, bats, helmets, cathers gear, cleats, sliding pads/shorts, batting gloves, softballs, etc. Basically, as long as it has some more use to it and it is softball related, they would gladly accept our generous offer. Even if you would like to make a monetary donation of some kind, that would work as well.
Please consider rummaging through some of your old softball stuff in the basement and see if you can come up with something that I could send these folks. Players can drop off to me at the high school any items they would like sent to Crescent City and I will be sure to get it to the proper authorities in charge. I would like to get this donation from the Hudson H.S. Softball Team sent to them by Feb.5. Please show our respect to the game and to those less fortunate by lending a helping hand.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give and I hope it takes a semi-trailer truck to send it all to them.

All ladies interested in playing fast pitch softball in the spring should stop by Coach Brown's room (A-119) sometime during the week of September 14-18 to pick up a player information card as well as information on the winter indoor softball league which starts in November.
Also there will be an announcement in the coming weeks indicating a formal meeting of all interested softball players to take place after school Friday October 9th at 2:40pm in Coach Brown's room (A-119). If you are unable to attend due to a fall sport, stop by Coach Brown's room to pick up the needed information.
Meredith named PD All-Star

CLEVELAND- The Cleveland Plain Dealer unveiled their Softball All-Star Team on Friday and included Hudson's star pitcher, Mindy Meredith.
Mindy finished the 2009 campaign with a 20-2 record, a minuscule 0.72 ERA and 243 strikeouts in 135.1 innings (1.79 K/IP). Meredith also carried her weight at the plate, batting .325 with seven homeruns and 26 RBI.
Elyria eclipses Explorers in championship

AKRON- In a rematch of the 2007 Division I state championship game in Ashland, the Explorers took on the Elyria Pioneers at Akron's Firestone Stadium.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning and wouldn't look back as they cruised to a 10-1 victory and hoisted the gold trophy.
Elyria's star pitcher, senior Tess Sito, was dominant. Sito benefited from great defense behind her and gave up just two hits while striking out eleven Explorers. The two-time state Player of the Year, shut out the Hudson offense until the sixth inning when Callie Drohan smashed a solo homerun over the center field fence. That run was only the second run surrendered by Sito in seven postseason games.
Hudson's own star pitcher, Mindy Meredith, was not as precise and did not receive the same defensive support as Sito. The Pioneers strung together five hits in their six-run fourth which started with the bottom half of the Elyria lineup and was capped by a grand slam by their sophomore shortstop.
Congratulations to the Lady Explorers for an amazing 29-3 season capped by bringing home the state runner-up trophy.
We also bid a fond farewell to the 2009 Seniors: Lindsey Bartos, Alyssa Brown, Shana Greene, and Ashley Smith. All four were vital in the continued success of the Hudson softball program and are the only players in Hudson history to have finished seasons as both state champions and state runners-up.
